Unlike the commonly known feeding tubes through one of the nostrils, this method of feeding allows a direct flow of nutrients into the stomach via a special feeding tube inserted through the abdominal wall. This mode of feeding is more straightforward as it bypasses the oesophagus and enters the stomach directly. As such, this tube is shorter and allow faster and more consistent flow of liquid nutrients into the body. Since this tube does not pass through the nostril, there is less local irritations to the oral-nasal cavity and provide more comfortable for the user. This tube also last longer and need only 2 to 3 replacement yearly making in much less labour intensive and therefore more manageable for any caregiver.
Placement of this tube unusually require an endoscopic first insertion followed by replacement in the clinic settings. The tube replacement procedure can usually be completed within 30min and requires no sedation.
